PalmPower reviews Documents To Go 4.0 (continued)

Word To Go does an excellent job of allowing you to see your documents on your handheld and your desktop, so it makes sense to add the ability to see your work in Arial, Times New Roman, or any other font that you choose. With that said though, Word To Go has made remarkable strides in a fairly short time, and I look forward to seeing what is planned in future releases.

Sheet To Go
Sheet To Go, the spreadsheet portion of Documents To Go, is simply outstanding for several reasons. The first thing I noticed was that it has better compression than some of the other Palm OS spreadsheet products currently available, as all of my test documents were on the order of 10K smaller in Sheet To Go. This may not seem like a very large difference, but it can certainly add up if you need to keep several large spreadsheets accessible on your handheld.

The second thing that I noticed is that Sheet To Go is lightning fast. I was amazed at how quickly it was able to open each of my sample documents. I have to wait several infuriating seconds with some other products, but the file open process was almost instantaneous with Sheet To Go.

As seen in Figure D, it is remarkably easy to add and edit functions in Sheet To Go, a substantial improvement over the first version, which only allowed you to recalculate totals based on pre-existing functions.

FIGURE D

Sheet To Go is an excellent program that's easy to use. Now you can negotiate big deals on the golf course, all the while keeping track of your most important stats.

In this latest release, it's possible to perform almost any calculation you can think of, which makes it much simpler to update sales projections (or pretty much anything else) on the road when necessary. You can insert rows, columns, even entire worksheets, and the formatting options are also rather good.

It's possible to lock individual cells, in order to avoid accidentally changing important information. You can choose left, center, or right alignment, insert bold text, and change both the cell and text color if you so desire. There are a number of different number formats to choose from as well, including general, fixed, scientific, currency, percent, text, date, and time, just as you would expect from Microsoft Excel on your desktop.

I honestly couldn't find any shortcomings in Sheet To Go, though that could be because I typically don't use spreadsheets that are very complicated or make use of some of the more advanced functions available in Microsoft Excel. I can say though that it is much faster than any other Palm OS spreadsheet that I have used, that it is very easy to navigate and use, and that it includes a wide range of functions (a total of 110) that will most likely serve all of your needs. It also works with both Quattro Pro and Lotus 1-2-3, in addition to Microsoft Excel.

"Slideshow To Go is the newest addition to the Documents To Go arsenal, and it is quite impressive."

Slideshow To Go
Slideshow To Go is the newest addition to the Documents To Go arsenal, and it is quite impressive. I've never seen anything quite like it for the Palm OS platform, though there are some other PowerPoint viewing programs available. In effect, it does everything that you could possibly want, except of course that you cannot actually edit slides on the handheld device.
